Becoming an “RV Friendly” Highway Sign State

RVers and campers spent an estimated $3.8 billion in local communities from May to August of 2004 and the market continues to grow. By becoming an “RV Friendly State,” your state can ensure that RVers will stop in and stay a while rather than just passing through!

Motorists driving motor homes or towing trailers or other tow vehicles have difficulty identifying and locating service facilities that have large parking spaces and other amenities that can accommodate these drivers’ needs. Drivers of RVs wanting to stop at restaurants, gas stations, and other facilities are faced with uncertainty that they will be able to easily maneuver into a business until they actually arrive and enter. If the facility does not have adequate space for parking or turning around they may be faced with having to tie up the parking lot until they can turn their vehicles around or unhook tow vehicles if they are not comfortable navigating in tight spots. Faced with doubts about getting into a tough spot, RV motorists may bypass destinations and businesses not knowing that they could have been well accommodated.

This problem can be alleviated by advance symbol signing that will alert RV motorists of facilities that cater to the special needs of motorhomes and RV trailer combinations. If these symbols are attached to the highway exit logo signs (commonly known as gas/food/lodging signs, these signs are technically “specific service signs”) of qualified facilities, RV motorists will know with confidence that those businesses will provide them with destinations where maneuverability is not an issue. RV Friendly criteria have been developed for businesses and are attached to this document.

States can become RV Friendly by allowing retailers who purchase highway exit specific service logo signs to affix or include an RV Friendly logo on their logo. The logo currently used is a yellow filled circle with "RV" in the center. This will let RV drivers know that these businesses accommodate their special needs in a manner that is consistent nationwide.

With RV Friendly road sign logos appearing or set to appear on Gas-Food-Lodging signs on highways in Oregon, Louisiana, Florida and Tennessee, and Texas. Legislators from other states are contemplating legislation to allow for the logo to appear on signs in their state. Write your congressman and/or senator and encourage them to embrace the program.
